The Aintree Grand National. On Tuesday February 26, 1839, Lottery became the first winner of The Grand National. In those days the field had to jump a stone wall (now the water jump), cross a stretch of plough land and finish over two hurdles.

  • He still remains the only horse to have won the Grand National three times. Click to play video: Grand National — Red Rum. The current course, which stages races over conventional fences and hurdles, opened in 1839. A difficult period for Aintree in the post-war years led to a sale to a property developer and concerns about the future of the.
  • The 1967 Grand National was the scene of one the most notorious pile ups in Grand National history. Foinavon had odds of 100/1 to win the race.
  • Sponsored by Randox Health, it is a UK handicap steeplechase over 4 miles 514 yards with horses jumping 30 fences over two laps. The prize fund for the Grand National is £1,000,000 which makes it the most valuable jump race in Europe. 600 million people will watch the race in over 140 countries with more than 70,000 in attendance at Aintree on the day.
  • That win also gave Nicholls — champion jumps trainer in Britain on ten occasions to date in his career — his first and, thus far, only win in the Aintree Grand National. Greys are always popular in the National at Aintree and there have been plenty of near misses in recent times, with Suny Bay (1997 and 1998), What’s Up Boys (2002).

A race was run at Gatwick from 1916–18, organised by the National Hunt Committee.
There was no input whatever from the Aintree executive.

None of the three races was called the Grand National, runners at Gatwick raced in the opposite direction to that at Aintree (ie right-handed), and no attempt was made to replicate the Aintree fences. In 1916 the race was called The Racecourse Association Steeplechase and in 1917 and 1918 The War National. The winners of these races were:

1918 Poethlyn, Ernie Piggott, Harry Escott, Mrs Hugh Peel 5/1

1917 Ballymacad, Edmund Driscoll, Aubrey Hastings, Sir George Bullough 100/9

1916 Vermouth, Jack Reardon, J Bell, P F Heybourne 100/8
